Debian includes more or less sane ping.
Redhat folks are less reactive, but I did not see 5.9 yet.

Good ping may be found at ftp://ftp.inr.ac.ru/iputils-current.tar.gz,
though it will not compile for linux-2.0. Debian's one is more "portable".
