You are running hdparm -t, right?

root@laser:/home/andrea# hdparm -t /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
Timing buffered disk reads: 32 MB in 4.71 seconds = 6.79 MB/sec

Here it looks like, it's working fine, this number is the same in all
kernel I run. Could you try it out also with the stock 2.2.3 kernel?
