I don't have these problems with 2.2.2 or 2.2.2-ac1. The system is a Dell PowerEdge 6300, quad Xeon, 2Gb. It has 3 onboard AIC7xxx controllers (2 U2W, and 1 narrow) and a Megaraid 428. I had the same problem when using an offboard 2940UW instead of the onboard ones. There is 1 disk on each U2W, CD and DAT on the narrow, and 6 disk array on the Megaraid (3 logical units). All filesystems are Ext2 (various block sizes). When trying to boot the rawhide 2.2.3-2smp, it can't find the boot partition and panics. I don't have as much detail here because serial console wasn't on. When trying to boot a 2.2.3-ac1 or a 2.2.2-ac3, the Megaraid doesn't find the second two devices (of 3). Most of the other devices mount as dirty (they shouldn't be). These kernels don't have the video console enabled (the rawhide kernel does). I have mount-2.8a-2, but it seems like the failures are before that. Everything works fine under 2.2.2-ac1.
