works fine now (however, the 'wrong' method of kernel 2.2.0-beta7 and fdisk 2.8a made a 606 MB partition, the new one is 599 MB ;-)
Many thanks! BTW, is it possible to mount (IBM-?) SuperFloppy formatted MO media? I would appreciate a pointer to an appropriate FAQ-list ...
