There used to be "E2compr" (http://debs.fuller.edu/e2compr/), a patch to allow transparent file compression on ext2, and "double" (http://perso.cybercable.fr/~verbavat/double/), a compressed block device driver.
I have no idea if they are updated for 2.2.x though.
