Line 351 of linux/init/main.c
static unsigned long memory_start = 0; static unsigned long memory_end = 0;
Shows them as static in version 2.3.13 setup_arch(....), line 1125, initializes them. So you look for setup_arch() in linux/arch/i386/kernel/setup.c (line 241).

Penguin : Linux version 2.3.13 on an i686 machine (400.59 BogoMips). Warning : It's hard to remain at the trailing edge of technology.
