no, it isn't. i just tried 2.3.34 with gcc 2.7.2.3 as well as egcs 1.0.2, 1.1.2 and gcc 2.95, and they all still work... i'd guess you have some make/shell/compiler problem; see arch/i386/Makefile for the autodetection code -- it is supposed to turn these options on only if the compiler supports them.
