In that case, the problem wasn't parport_pc to start with, and the problem lies with ppa or the Zip drive.
David Campbell has a utility called id_probe.c, so you might want to start at http://www.torque.net/~campbell and see if you can find it anywhere. That will tell us some more about your parallel port.
