I noticed the same thing today. The first time I've tried to use rvplayer 5.0 with Linux, so I don't know about the previous kernel versions.
The strace shows that it gets upset about not being able to write everything it wants into /dev/dsp. The sound works for about 1 second, and after that rvplayer reports a general error.

[ the same sequence of write/ioctl(SNDCTL_DSP_GETOPTR), happens few times ] ... write(10, "?\377n\375f\374\252\376a\1\30\3\266"..., 1470) = 320 ^^^ And rvplayer reports an error and stops working.
Any clues?
This is 2.2.0-pre7 on (originally) RedHat 5.0 system, SB AWE64 ISA PnP card, which otherwise works nicely.
