I can't help with the rest of your query but have one of my own related to the above...
I regularly make use of the following command to do multi-volume backups, both on floppy and on ZipDisks, and I assumed the same would also work on tapes. From what you say above, apparently not, but can you confirm such to be the case?
Q> cd /tmp/uploads Q> tar cMvf /dev/sda4 *
