Nothing is going to beat the Linux/SGI penguin code I have in mind:
Underlay plane is setup with a huge Penguin bitmap, set the Alpha channel to display 20% of the underlay plane; then run all of the regular console code on top of this.
Any userland application can load something different on the underlay plane after boot, of course.
