The stackable layers I mentioned do this for you. It makes it very easy to implement for instance nullfs. I've been looking at it for a while, and yes, I think one should be a VFS expert to do this safely. Maybe I'll risk trying one day though. It would be interesting to hear what you guys think about stackable layers.
