    Yes. I also think it breaks the LD_PRELOAD version of zlib[c] when it
    attempts to open a "file" and pass the result to some other programs,
    but this may simply be a question of pipe semantics. Specifically, with
    zlib[c] enabled and the jdk port, the jdk won't work. With zlib[c]
    disabled, it will. My portable is running everything compressed - even
    /etc - without problems otherwise.

    (kernel 2.0.0, libc 5.3.12, ld.so 1.8.1, gcc 2.7.2, binutils blah.14, etc.)

    I should investigate this further. I believe the jdk used to work in
    this config up to 1.3.90.
