it's not with this :

alt 998 to switch on alt <0..255> and alt 999 to switch it off. you still
can use the special keys if you want to. only thing is that it minits the
VC's to 998. oh well.

so, you can escape from this problem. it's actually done this way with a
multiuser operating system
