    SubjectRe: Linux-1.3.85 - ppp slowdowns gone (?)
    Date
    From
For me, the slowness is not gone.

I find that when comparing kernels 1.3.72 and 1.3.85, the latter
exhibits severe interactive slowness over CSLIP and PPP connections.
When I use minicom to dial into the same system, there is no noticable
    lag when echo'ing typed characters.

Furthermore, all this talk about Solaris 2 vs. SunOS 4.1 is irrelevant
in my case: I'm connecting (with CSLIP) to a Xylogics Micro Annex
(where I can then login to either a SunOS 4.1 or Solaris 2 hosts, both
of which behave the same). Btw, since the Micro Annex doesn't
support PPP, I tested PPP to an ISP (slip.net). The interactive
response was worse than CSLIP, but that's probably because of the load
on the remote machine (as PPP with 1.3.72 is also worse than CSLIP to
    my Micro Annex).

The problem is not line noise, either. I've run the tests too many
times (at least 30 times). 100% of the time with kernels after 1.3.72
I experience the problem, and 0% of the time with kernel 1.3.72.

The modem in question is a US Robotics 14.4. Linux distribution:
Redhat 3.0.3. I use `dip' 3.3.7n to make the CSLIP connection.
