Don't use pre-forked servers. They used some sort of hack to get them operational under 1.2.x and later 1.1.x kernels, but something got fixed during the 1.3 series, and it no longer works. Check out their hypernews for 1.5.1 at http://hoohoo.ncsa.uiuc.edu/ for more information. Generally speaking though, forget about using preforked servers under 1.3, at least until the code is there to support it properly.
