This is the important difference! Hardware problems are quite common
but I still doubt this is the case here. Again, it starts happening
somewhere between 1.3.58 and 1.3.74.

There is one already. Just run "make -j" under 1.2.13. It doesn't
detect any problems on my hardware :-).
