I read somewhere in Iomega's documentation about a similar problem with Win95 and the parallel ZIP drive. They claim to have fixed it - so you might look around on their web site for some clue on this one.
Meanwhile, I think we have the outline for a protocol to support chained parallel devices on Linux (thanks, Alan and Phillip, for your help). I'm working on some other things right now, but I'll pick this one up again after the code thaw ...
