You are correct that syslogd is run earlier than kerneld in /etc/rc2.d
and I will swap them and see if it helps. This doesn't answer to why a
.80 kernel (with kerneld usage built in) should succeed and the later
ones (that I have) fail. The config doesn't change.

This also has nothing to do with the .91 kernel failing to identify the
cuax devices.

I'll surely try your sugestion,
