I've been putting forth some effort to get people to implement the missing cdrom audio ioctls implemented. I think volume read went into 77. I've got a CDROMCLOSETRAY ioctl patch that works great; I'm not sure why it hasn't gone in the kernel yet--still waiting on that.
I'd push to get CDROMCLOSETRAY put into the IDE driver too, except that I don't have one of those creatures, so I can't test it very well.
