The /etc/soundconf file is not used if you are configuring with Menuconfig which uses Hannus linux compatible sound configuration by default.
I would of course like to see the old sound configuration program phased out. My discussions with Hannu lead me to believe he feels this way as well. Hannu is the person who asked me to make Menuconfig automatically use the new kernel compatible config scheme.
Keeping and/or supporting the old configuration program just perpetuates the differences that have made it difficult to integrate sound configuration into alternative configuration scripts.
There are a few cards with minor differences which make it necessary to use the old sound configuration program and /etc/soundconf file. With time, we hope to code these difference into the other configure scripts.
Perhaps it would be a good idea to have Menuconfig write the /etc/soundconf file. I will give this some thought.
PS. Hanu, I apologize if I have misspoke any of your opinions.
