That didn't do it for me, so I turned off CONFIG_MODVERSIONS to build the kernel. Then depmod (from modules-2.1.13) reported "unresolved symbols" in all my modules except ipv6.o and scsi_syms.o. Also, there were a few warnings on compilation:
