Here's the relevant portion of my .screenrc, which enables colors:

terminfo * AX:AF=\E[3%p1%dm:AB=\E[4%p1%dm
termcap * AX:AF=\E[3%dm:AB=\E[4%dm

This works both on Solaris and on Linux.. Note that you must have screen
version 3.7.1 or greater.
